CLEVELAND, Ohio — The corporation that oversees Cuyahoga County’s Global Center for Health and Innovation has delayed until at least July making a final decision on what do with the many vacancies at the taxpayer-funded facility.
George Hillow, executive director of the Convention Facilities Development Corporation, told cleveland.com a preliminary review by consultants concluded that at least some space ought to be used as an extension of the attached Huntington Convention Center of Cleveland.
But that was before the coronavirus pandemic changed considerations for future conventions. Now, CS&L International, which conducted the review, is considering how social distancing and concerns about large gatherings could be incorporated into the plans, Hillow said.
“Before the virus, there were already new ideas for meeting rooms,” he said. “People planning meetings don’t want classroom-style rooms anymore, they want a more unique, open space. Now the virus hits, and they really want more open space.”
The $465-million Global Center and convention complex is being paid for with a quarter-cent increase of the sales tax approved in 2007. Built as a showcase for medical technology, the Global Center has been re-imagined several times over the last decade or more.
Last year, the facility lost two of its largest tenants and other occupants. This week, Hillow said only six leases remain, and all will expire within two years.
