The Des Moines Art Center welcomes visitors “home” to the galleries this summer with favorites from the permanent collections while moving the community-centric exhibition of Justin Favela: Central American to 2021. Those dates for next year's exhibitions will be announced at a later date.
“Connection with the community and audience participation are critical to Favela’s work,” Curator Laura Burkhalter said. “He has worked with almost every department of the museum for months to plan his exhibition and its related events and celebrations. We want to honor this work, and present his joyful art as intended, so have made the decision to postpone until we can invite our visitors to fully enjoy Favela’s art.”
This summer, the Art Center will feature selections from the permanent collections in the Anna K. Meredith Gallery. The works on view will be a mix of familiar favorites and exciting newcomers.
“We know the arts can help us rise above the challenges of our time,” Director Jeff Fleming said. Final dates for this gallery opening are pending as Art Center staff continue to navigate the changing landscape of the pandemic; updates will be posted on the Art Center's website, desmoinesartcenter.org, and the Art Center’s Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter channels.
“When we do open, we look forward to focusing on our own collections and community; it will be like seeing old friends and old favorites, like coming home,” Fleming said. “We want our visitors to come back and see their museum and to celebrate who and what we are.”
Blank Park Zoo reopens
Blank Park Zoo is welcoming visitors with reserve-timed tickets sold in advance. The Zoo is maintaining the visitor capacity at 20%.
“Blank Park Zoo is ready for its next phase and we have a plan in place to welcome visitors back to the Zoo,” said Anne Shimerdla, president and COO of Blank Park Zoo.
Some of the enhanced measures for COVID-19 safety that have been adopted for the first phase of the Zoo’s reopening include:
Timed-Tickets for guests and reservations for Blank Park Zoo members: All guests, including members, need to reserve their date and time in advance. Members are admitted free of charge but will need to reserve their ticket in advance. Instructional videos on how to purchase tickets is available at BlankParkZoo.com. Please reserve your tickets before arriving at Blank Park Zoo. Anyone having issues purchasing tickets online should call 515-285-4722.
One-way path: A one-way Safari Trail has been created so guests can see most of the major animal habitats. Signs and painted animal footprints will help visitors distance properly.
Zoo hours: Zoo hours are 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. The last admission is at 3 p.m.
Masks: Blank Park Zoo is strongly encouraging every visitor age two and older to wear a mask, just as all Blank Park Zoo staff will be wearing a mask.
Enhanced cleaning and sanitation: Blank Park Zoo has installed additional hand sanitizer and will be cleaning and sanitizing touch points often per CDC and Iowa Department of Public Health guidelines.
Some areas are closed: Some indoor areas, including the Discovery Center, all rides, areas with major touch points, animal demonstrations and animal feeding experiences will not open during this first phase of opening.
“As a nonprofit, we promised to keep animal care a top priority while we were closed, and with your help we were able to accomplish this. It’s now time to reopen Blank Park Zoo to ensure we can continue to accomplish our mission of conservation, education, research and recreation,” Shimerdla said. “The Zoo depends on operations to care for the animals at a cost of approximately $19,000 per day.”
Shimerdla said if supporters want to help, they could contribute to the nonprofit Blank Park Zoo’s relief fund, at www.blankparkzoo.com.
Interstate construction closes entrance ramp
Work to widen and reconstruct pavement on northbound and eastbound Interstate 35/80 in Urbandale requires closing the northbound and eastbound I-35/80 entrance ramp at the Douglas Avenue interchange from Monday, June 1, through June 19, weather permitting, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Grimes construction office.
The ramp closure is necessary to allow the contractor to reconstruct the ramp to match up with the additional lanes being added to I-35/80 between the 100th Street interchange and the Douglas Avenue interchange as part of the Urban Loop (formerly Rider Corner) flyover project.
Westbound traffic on Douglas Avenue wanting to enter northbound/eastbound I-35/80 will be directed to continue west to 128th Street, continuing onto James Street in Grimes, then north to 37th Street, then south on Iowa 141 to I-35/80.
The Iowa DOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, obey the posted speed limit and other signs in the work area, and be aware that traffic fines for moving violations are at least double in work zones. As in all work zones, drivers should stay alert, allow ample space between vehicles, and wear seat belts.
