- Cerner and American Hospital Dubai recently launched the first artificial intelligence (AI) research center, which aims to leverage electronic health records (EHR) to create centers of excellence for oncology, infectious diseases, and bariatric medicine.

The AI research center will use big data analytics and machine learning capabilities to support data-based clinical research activities and data-drive operational improvement projects, Cerner said in the announcement.

The two main projects researchers will focus on is enabling home health experience and enhancing care management related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are privileged to partner with the American Hospital Dubai. This AI research center initiative will not only further enhance AHD’s response to the COVID-19 crisis but, more importantly, equip AHD with cutting-edge technologies to redefine health and care in the new post COVID-19 pandemic era,” Alaa Adel, managing director, Cerner Middle East and Africa, said in the announcement.

Leveraging data through AI is a “promising approach,” Cerner noted. This approach allows for substantial progress in the areas of virtual medicine, population health management, innovative use of data analytics and visualization, and advanced clinical decision support.

“We are proud to collaborate with Cerner on this new landmark initiative for the region. Together, we share the vision and strategy of the UAE Government and rulers to use the power of AI to help minimize the burden of chronic diseases, ultimately for the welfare of our citizens and residents,” said Sherif Beshara, chief executive officer, Mohamed & Obaid Al Mulla Group.

“We also relate closely to the Government’s mission to fully integrate AI into medical and security services. This initiative takes us one step closer to our objective: to continue to redefine a patient-centric health care delivery system, thereby empowering individuals to proactively manage their health.”

At the end of May, a KLAS report found that AI capabilities are still evolving and are a beneficial option for EHR customers who are prepared to operationalize models and drive outcomes themselves.

KLAS noted that Epic and Cerner are currently the only vendors with live artificial intelligence solutions and are leveraging AI largely for population health management and clinical decision support.

Epic is using AI to predict hospital readmissions, patient risk levels, mortality, ED utilization, at-home fall risk, sepsis, hospital-acquired disease, and patient deterioration.

Cerner is using AI for A1c predictions for outpatient populations, readmission predictions, and heart failure predictions. It is the only vendor with coding and documentation assistance.

The vendor’s AI applications within EHR include charge assist for accurate coding, chart assistant for documentation improvement, chart search for natural language-driven search engine spanning, virtual scribe to decipher clinician/patient conversations, and voice assist for proof-of-concept phase.

Through Cerner and American Hospital Dubai’s AI center, patients will be able to use smart and convenient services including telemedicine, video, and phone visits, from anywhere.

Remote patient monitoring using connected devices containing patient health information will also allow caregivers to boost patient experience.

American Hospital Dubai can leverage big data analytics to better understand the healthcare needs of the UAE population and allow providers to tend to patients more individually.

American Hospital Dubai can create personalized care plans, predict disease courses and use risk assessment models incorporated into the EHR to better assist patients, Cerner explained.

“We are expected to launch the Center over the next three to six months. Cerner has a wealth of experience in health care information technology and data analytics worldwide, and the timing of the Center could not have been better given the challenging times we are all experiencing during this global pandemic,” Beshara concluded.
