To combat the freezing temperatures of the last couple days, The Salvation Army opened a warming center for those who need a warm shelter. It’s something the organization does when temperatures drop to or below freezing, and they also open a cooling room in the summer on hot Iowa days.
“It gives the community an opportunity to get warmed up when it’s bitterly cold outside,” Captain Pam Kasten said.
Kasten said the room isn’t just for those without a home, but it caters to anyone who needs a warm place. Those who are walking and need a quick warm up before they get where they’re going are just as welcome. Depending on foot traffic, they may provide hot chocolate or coffee, but mostly, it’s a place to avoid the elements.
While it hasn’t been hugely busy, Kasten said it was important they have a place open for those who need it. The warming room will be open at Salvation Army from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
