Rhinelander - For the past two weeks, people across the world have had the opportunity to watch some of the world's most impressive athletes show off their skills at the Olympics.
But people spending two weeks on their couches while the fittest individuals flex their skills in Tokyo is quite ironic.
A Sports and Fitness Industry Association research study shows a positive correlation between Olympics coverage and an increase in physical activity.
But Anytime Fitness in Rhinelander say that they have not seen an increase in gym-goers since the 2021 Olympics began.
"I tend to think that the Olympics makes people more motivated to watch TV than to come work out," said Sydney Skalski, the Member Experience Manager at Anytime Fitness.
Skalski says they have not seen an increase in gym participants since the start of the Olympics.
Instead she says they have seen a change in the gym's workout culture throughout the pandemic.
"We've seen a lot of shift from like aesthetic goals to a lot more of like mental health, physical health goals. A lot of people are wanting to feel better, have more energy, maybe even decrease anxiety and depression," said Skalski.
For anyone feeling inspired by the Olympics, gym employees note the impact that joining a gym can have. They say that it is a safe and judgment-free space where people can get in shape and find social support.
