ORLANDO, Fla. – The National Hurricane Center is watching three tropical waves moving across the central and eastern Atlantic.
Development chances have faded with a broad area of low pressure near the Cabo Verde islands in the far eastern Atlantic, but have increased with two other tropical waves in the basin.

The area of low pressure with the greatest chance for development is located about a thousand miles west of the Cabo Verde Islands. This disturbance is producing thunderstorms southwest of its center. Environmental conditions are expected to become more favorable and a tropical depression is possible by the middle of the week. The system is forecast to move slowly toward the west-southwest or west during the next couple of days, and then move toward the west-northwest by mid-week as it picks up speed.
The National Hurricane Center is giving this a 20% chance to develop over the next two days and a 40% chance over the next five days.

Closer to the Lesser Antilles and Caribbean, an area of low pressure is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms. Some gradual development of this system is possible as it moves west-northwestward at 10 to 15 mph.
The hurricane center is giving it a 20% chance for development within the next two days and a 30% chance in the next five days.
Lastly, the robust wave that moved off of Africa several days ago continues to fall apart. Showers and thunderstorms associated with that broad area of low pressure have diminished. Strong upper-level winds and cooler waters are expected to prevent significant development of this system while it moves toward the west or west-northwest at about 10 mph during the next few days.
The hurricane center is giving it a 20% chance for development within the next two days and a 20% chance in the next five days.
While the tropics are trying to wake up after a quiet July, the basin is only marginally conducive for development at this time. Robust waves moving off of Africa will become more common as we head into the peak of hurricane season and the Atlantic as a whole is expected to become more favorable for development by mid-to-late August.
The next named storm will be called Fred. Hurricane season runs through Nov. 30.
