Today, Mayor Keller, Councilor Brook Bassan, and the City of Albuquerque Parks and Recreation Department announced plans to deliver on an aquatic center at North Domingo Baca Park in the northeast quadrant of the city. The proposed design will include a long-awaited aquatic center, similar to the existing West Mesa Aquatic Center.
“The can was kicked down the road by previous City leaders for far too long on this project,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “We are delivering on this decades-old promise of an eastside aquatic center that the community has long supported. Our aquatic facilities play a crucial role in keeping kids safe and engaged year-round. Thousands of families discover a love of swimming and learn important social and athletic skills at these facilities each year.”
There are currently four conceptual designs that have been brought before the public.
Almost twenty years ago, a master plan for the North Domingo Baca Park was created after much public input. This plan included a phased approach to developing the 57-acre park. Nearly every portion of this master plan has been completed – except for the aquatic center.
Today’s announcement also included plans for a new splash pad near the park’s playground, with construction beginning next month. In addition, improvements to the existing dog park and east parking lot should be complete before the end of the 2021. Two vault toilets, and improved bocce courts were also added to the park earlier this year.
“I am very excited to support the Albuquerque administration in prioritizing the long-await 50-meter pool at North Domingo Baca Park,” said City Councilor Brooke Bassan. “This facility is finding a way to connect many different forms of government to bring our community closer together. Between the City Council, the City of Albuquerque, Bernallilo County and now Albuquerque Public Schools (APS), I believe we will obtain final funding for this project much sooner than initially anticipated. This long-awaited project will fill a need gap and achieve aquatic equity for every youth, senior, family and athlete. I encourage voters to vote for the three-million-dollar city bond and the two-million-dollar APS bond.”
At yesterday’s board meeting, the Albuquerque Public School (APS) Board voted to reserve a portion of their proposed bond funding for this project. If both are approved by voters in November, the 2022 GO Bond and the APS Capital Improvement Project Bond would provide an additional $5 million dollars towards the project and the design phase would begin immediately. Dependent on additional funding, construction on the aquatic center could begin as early as 2023.
“Our aquatics staff work hard every day to provide residents with great aquatics facilities and youth programming,” said Dave Simon, Director of Parks and Recreation. “As a department, we are ecstatic to see this project moving forward.”
