HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) - Now: Hurricane Ida is making its way through the Gulf of Mexico Saturday evening and will continue its track toward the Gulf Coast. As of 7 PM CDT, the strongest sustained winds in the storm are 105 mph. Category 2 hurricane criteria is 96-110 mph winds.
The latest information and forecast from the National Hurricane Center shows that Ida will continue to rapidly intensify and will likely be a Category 4 Major Hurricane upon landfall. The current forecast has landfall occurring during Sunday afternoon along Louisiana’s South-Central coast.
This will bring heavy rainfall to the Gulf Coast and inland as it climbs north through Louisiana and Mississippi before pushing into Alabama and Tennessee on Monday and Tuesday. Wind speeds of 130 mph or greater will be likely along the Louisiana Gulf Coast near landfall. Life-threatening storm surge of 10 feet or greater can be expected upon landfall.
Impacts for the Tennessee Valley
While we are still two days away from our largest impacts here in North Alabama, it is still a great time to get prepared and develop a plan for your family!
The main impact for the Tennessee currently looks to be more significant rainfall, especially if the track stays close to where it currently is. Rainfall totals could be between 2 to 5 inches across much of North Alabama, with the heaviest rain more likely to fall to the west of I-65.
Monday and Tuesday are FIRST ALERT WEATHER DAYS! The threat for severe weather associated with Ida will begin on Monday afternoon and will linger through early Wednesday morning. Wind gusts of 50+ miles per hour will be possible across North Alabama along with the threat of damaging wind gusts, embedded tornadoes and flash flooding. However, if the storm’s center has weakened enough by the time it reaches North Alabama, the dynamics may not be as strong. That could limit the stronger storms here, but we still think that either way we will see periods of heavy rain.
The 48 First Alert Weather Team will continue to examine the latest trends keep you up to date with updates all weekend long. Make sure you have the 48 First Alert Weather App (Available for Apple and Android) for the latest video updates and track!
