The National Weather Service has forecast high heat temperatures into the 90ºF and high humidity for the remainder of this week. Additionally, isolated severe storms along with possible damanging wind gusts are possible during the afternoon and evening hours.
The Stacy C. Sherwood Community Center, 3740 Old Lee Highway, will be open as a cooling center from noon to 6 p.m. Aug. 25-27. Please implement appropriate health guidelines as appropriate. (Reminder: masks are required when in all city facilities, including the Sherwood Center.)
The Heat Index is a measure of how hot it really feels when relative humidity is factored in with the actual air temperature. As an example, if the air temperature is 92°F and the relative humidity is 65 percent, the heat index — how hot it feels — is 108°F.
Remember: many public buildings, including libraries and community centers, can serve as cooling centers. Be sure to check the facility website or call the facility to confirm access and hours.
A few tips from the National Weather Service:
- Never leave people or animals in any vehicles — even for a short time — and bring pets indoors, out of the heat.
- Drink plenty of fluids.
- Stay in air-conditioned rooms and buildings.
- Stay out of the sun.
- Check on relatives and neighbors.
- Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside, when possible. Reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.
- Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
- Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible.
- If you must work outdoors, schedule frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments.
- Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool, shaded location.
- Heat stoke is an emergency: call 911 immediately for assistance.
