FLINT, MI — Hurley Medical Center in Flint is going to start laying off employees.

“Like many other hospitals and health systems across the nation we are faced with financial challenges caused by reduced patient volumes including surgeries and other elective procedures,” said Laura Jasso, administrator marketing and community relations for the hospital. “Staffing adjustments are being made throughout the medical center to right size staffing with current and anticipated volumes. These adjustments are taking the form of voluntary and involuntary reductions and layoffs.”

The amount of layoffs is not yet known as analysis is ongoing, Jasso said.

As of Friday, May 1, Genesee County has had 1,601 confirmed COVID-19 cases, 192 of whom have died, resulting in a fatality rate of 12 percent. Of the confirmed cases, 366 are hospitalized, one more than on Thursday.

The average age of those who have died is 73, with the youngest death being 27 and the oldest 99.
