An employee of Apalachee Center was arrested Monday after allegedly having a sexual encounter with a woman he worked with in a counseling group.
Deion Jarrell Young, 23, was arrested on a charge of an "employee having sex with a mental patient," a second-degree felony, according to court documents. He was booked into the Leon County Detention Facility.
In early March, a woman reported to the Tallahassee Police Department that she was sexually battered by Young, who served as her "peer specialist" for her counseling group.
She said she went on a walk with Young, whom she didn't know well, on the campus of the Apalachee Center. They sat down at a picnic table near the basketball court — away from others — when Young said he had overheard her say she wanted to have sex and get pregnant.
The woman said she did — but not with him. Young allegedly forced himself on her.
"(She) was afraid of what Young would do to her since she was secluded from everyone else, so she performed oral sex on him," the arrest report states. "When he was done, they walked back to their group."
Young, in an interview with police, said he was a "recovery coach" for the woman's counseling group and that his role was to provide "encouragement, counseling, accountability and assistance" with a variety of group tasks.
He acknowledged having sexual contact with the woman, "But he believed it was consensual," the arrest report says.
"He stated 'lust' took over their actions..." the report says. "He explained he felt what they were doing was wrong because he was an employee of Apalachee Center and told her to stop."
Young said they both apologized to each other for what happened.
Prosecutors approved the charge against Young because of his role as a "recovery coach" and "peer specialist" over the victim, the report says.
Under Florida law, it is illegal for an employee to have sex with a patient at a receiving or treatment facility, even if the patient consents.
