(Aug. 19, 2021: Update 8:20 a.m.) Tropical Storm Henri, currently southwest of Bermuda, is expected to strengthen into a hurricane by the weekend, but it's too early to tell how strongly it will impact Nantucket and the rest of New England, meteorologists say.
A turn toward the northwest is anticipated, followed by a turn toward the north and eventually the northeast, according to the National Weather Service.
At least one model has the path of the storm passing directly over Nantucket.
Some models, however, have shown a westward shift in the track.
Damaging winds are expected east of the track, with flooding rain along and to the west of the track. Storm-surge flooding is also expected, according to the National Weather Service.
Nantucket Race Week organizers say they are keeping tabs on the storm's progress and communicating with entrants in Sunday's Opera House Cup wooden-boat regatta. No decisions about the race had been made as of Wednesday afternoon.
