HOLLAND, MI — A new restaurant that specializes in smoked food is coming to the Holland Civic Center Place in an effort to to generate revenue for the building that has been heavily impacted by the coronavirus pandemic.
Smoke’n Tulip is set to open inside the civic center for its first dinner service on Saturday, August 22, according to a press release.
The civic center, located at 150 W. 8th St., in downtown Holland, is managed by VenuWorks Inc, a venue management company based in Ames, Iowa.
Because of of the challenges in returning to hosting group events due to the coronavirus pandemic, officials say that the new restaurant is an opportunity to bring in added revenue.
“We are so grateful to have such a great community, that we want to do our part in allowing the public to enjoy this beautiful venue with a slightly unique offering. We are hopeful our guests enjoy their experience and see what the future brings us,” said Chris Hart, executive director of the civic center.
The center would normally play host to graduation ceremonies, corporate meetings, trade shows, wedding receptions and other large events and gatherings.
“This pandemic hit us pretty hard not being able to do inside events so, we finally made a decision to try to do something to bring a little revenue and keep this place viable, while also still providing a service to the community as this is a city-owned building,” said Jay Allen, civic center marketing manager.
Before the ongoing coronavirus pandemic forced restaurants and other businesses to close temporarily last spring, officials said the civic center was on pace to host 367 events.
Allen said the restaurant will be made up of civic center staff members and is expected to remain in the building until coronavirus restrictions ease and allow for large gatherings once again.
According to the release, the restaurant will have a capacity of up to 72 guests and will utilize the building’s community atrium. Thirteen tables will be available throughout the entire restaurant, with some indoor seating up to eight people. There is also a porch area.
Guests will be expected to follow restaurant guidelines on social distancing and wearing a mask.
The restaurant will feature a variety of dishes prepared through a smoker, such as beef brisket and pork spareribs, though there will be other non-smoked items on the menu as well.
The restaurant will not provide alcohol sales upon its opening, but said it may be an option in the future.
Executive Chef Jerramiah Chabitch, who has led the civic center’s food and beverage service team since April 2019, will lead Smoke’n Tulip’s kitchen.
After its first dinner service on Saturday, Aug. 22, from 5 to 8 p.m., standard operating hours will be Wednesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for lunch and 5 to 8 p.m. for dinner. A full menu is available at the civic center website.
Reservations can be made by calling 616-928-2000. To-Go option will be available starting Wednesday, Aug. 26, by calling 616-928-2000.
Restaurant officials said that until coronavirus restrictions are lifted and group gatherings return closer to normal, Smoke’n Tulip will continue to operate if there is interest from the public.
