The Segerstrom Center for the Arts announced Tuesday, Aug. 25 that its School of Dance and Music for Children with Disabilities has been renamed Studio D: Arts School for All Abilities.

The change aligns the school’s name more closely with its more than 300 students — who range in age from 4 to 22 — and reflects the growing number of disciplines taught.

“We wanted to create a name that would be symbolic of the vast diversity of our community and, especially, honor children and young adults with physical and cognitive disabilities and their families,” said Center President Casey Reitz in a statement released Tuesday. “We have steadily expanded our adaptive classes to include more artistic disciplines, such as musical theater, to complement the dance and music classes. And we make every effort to create a safe and inclusive environment where competition does not exist and everyone shines brighter.”

The school welcomes students with Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism spectrum disorders, hearing and visual impairments and other disabilities. The center works with organizations such as Easterseals, United Cystic Fibrosis Orange County and the Orange County Regional Center to assist them with their programs for children and young adults.

“They encourage and support everyone to fully express their talents and live their dreams through dance, art, acting and music,” said Mark Whitley, CEO of Easterseals, said in a statement issued by the Segerstrom Center. “The new name, and the meaning behind it, is a great expression of the inclusivity that we all strive to achieve.”

The school, which opened in November 2016, is currently enrolling students for the fall session, with classes running Sept. 16 through Nov. 21. All classes during the 10-week period will be virtual and will feature live and prerecorded components, according to the Segerstrom Center. Tuition is $200 for 10 weekly classes.

Before classes begin, students will receive videos from their teachers, detailing class materials and concepts that will be covered in class. Students will also receive “Studio D To-Go” kits that will include props, sensory tools and instruments.

Each class is limited to no more than 12 students and will have two instructors. Dance & music classes will be led by a dance instructor and musician. Musical theater classes will be led by a vocal coach and dance instructor.
