Board will review options at June meeting

BIG RAPIDS — The Recycle of Mecosta County board recently voted to keep its center closed until further notice.

The Recycle of Mecosta County Center, located at 424 N. 4th Avenue in Big Rapids, is a different recycling center than the recycling the city of Big Rapids offers.

Protection of volunteers as well as recyclers was a major topic during the meeting. The board agreed it is simply too soon to delve into attempting a safe reopening and will continue watching the coronavirus situation as it develops to determine the wisest action to take in reopening.

“When we do reopen, there will have to be changes to comply with social distancing," Recycle of Mecosta County Coordinator Rob McInnis said. “We have a month until our next meeting to be thinking about what those changes might be.”

Suggested changes include limiting the number of cars at a time, items being presorted to minimize the amount of time a person is in the center or having only one to two items allowed on certain days.

"We have all heard that there will be a new normal to things and Recycle of Mecosta County is no different," the news release stated. "Recycle of Mecosta County will need to comply with laws and continue to provide a safe environment for volunteers and recyclers."

The Recycle of Mecosta County board will be meeting the first week of June.

By then, they will know more of what the governor’s regulations will be and will make a decision concerning opening the center at that time.
