SANTA FE – Nineteen detainees at an immigrant detention facility in southern New Mexico have tested positive for COVID-19.
The New Mexico Department of Health on Saturday confirmed the positive tests at the federally operated Otero County Processing Center.
The facility houses hundreds of immigrants, including asylum seekers who face no criminal charges but are detained while their asylum case winds its way through immigration court.
The facility is north of Chaparral in Otero County. It's in ZIP code 88081 which straddles Otero and Doña Ana counties.
Health officials said the cases at the facility were previously accounted for within the total case counts for Otero and Doña Ana counties. The cases no longer count toward either county and moving forward will be a part of the state total only.
Daily numbers
New Mexico recorded 105 additional positive tests for COVID-19 on Saturday, bringing the state total to 4,778 positive tests for COVID-19:
Of those, 1,268 patients — or about 27 percent — have been designated as having recovered by the New Mexico Department of Health.
The state also announced that 10 more New Mexico residents had died, bringing the state's death toll to 191, while 198 individuals were hospitalized in New Mexico.
The majority of the new COVID-19 cases and each of the 10 deaths come from Bernalillo, McKinely and San Juan counties.
The latest positive tests:
- 20 new cases in Bernalillo County
- 1 new case in Cibola County
- 1 new case in Curry County
- 6 new cases in Doña Ana County
- 48 new cases in McKinley County
- 1 new case in Sandoval County
- 26 new cases in San Juan County
- 1 new case in San Miguel County
- 1 new case in Torrance County
The latest deaths:
- A male in his 40s from Bernalillo County who was hospitalized and had underlying medical conditions.
- A male in his 70s from McKinley County who was hospitalized.
- A female in her 80s from McKinley County who was hospitalized and had underlying medical conditions.
- A male in his 80s from McKinley County who was a resident of the Little Sisters of the Poor facility in Gallup.
- A male in his 90s from McKinley County who was a resident of the Little Sisters of the Poor facility in Gallup.
- A female in her 70s from San Juan County who was hospitalized and had underlying medical conditions. She was a patient at Wellbrook Transitional Rehabilitation Center in Farmington.
- A male in his 70s from San Juan County who was hospitalized and had underlying medical conditions. He was a resident of Cedar Ridge Inn in Farmington.
- A female in her 80s from San Juan County who was hospitalized and had underlying medical conditions. She was a resident of Cedar Ridge Inn in Farmington.
- A second female in her 80s from San Juan County hwo was hospitalized and had underlying medical conditions. She was a resident of Life Care Center of Farmington.
- A male in his 80s from San Juan County who was a resident of Cedar Ridge Inn in Farmington.

The DOH recommended that New Mexico residents with the following symptoms consistent with COVID-19 infection should contact the department's COVID-19 hotline immediately at 1-855-600-3453:
- fever;
- cough;
- shortness of breath;
- chills;
- repeated shaking with chills;
- muscle pain;
- headache;
- sore throat;
- and/or loss of taste or smell.
COVID-19 information and resources
New Mexicans showing symptoms of COVID-19 infection (fever, cough, or shortness of breath) were advised to contact their health care provider or the DOH COVID-19 hotline at 1-855-600-3453.
Testing is available for individuals under the following conditions:
- People without symptoms who are close contacts or household members of New Mexico residents who have already tested positive for the coronavirus;
- people without symptoms living in nursing homes;
- people without symptoms in congregate settings such as homeless shelters, group homes, and detention centers;
- people with symptoms including cough, fever, shortness of breath, chills, repeated shaking with chills, muscle pain, headache, sore throat, and/or loss of taste or smell.
