(PEORIA) - With the cancellation of spring sports, Peoria could be facing an estimated $1 million economic impact, according to Peoria Area Visitors and Convention Bureau CEO J.D. Dalfonso. The Peoria area hosts the Class 1A and 2A baseball state finals at Dozer Park and softball finals for all classes at the Eastside Centre in East Peoria.
"For softball, we estimate around an upwards of $620,000 in impact and in baseball too, that's about $350,000," said Dalfonso, who says the numbers are a conservative guestimate.
"These are based on hotel rooms, food and beverage buys, local sales taxes, and gas sales. What happens is when you lose that revenue, you can see that that businesses are closing or operating differently."
IHSA Assistant Executive Director Tracie Henry tells us that these state finals brings in thousands of people.
"For softball, it's 8 teams for 2 weekends so we're looking at 16 softball teams, 24 umpires, 6000 fans. I mean we know that the impact is going to be huge."
Henry also commended both Dozer Park and Eastside Centre for their communication, transparency and support.
As for future events, Dozer Park has extended their contract with the IHSA to continue hosting the 1A and 2A state finals for baseball.
The Eastside Centre's contract is set to expire this year and according to Henry, other suitors are interested in hosting and bidding to host the softball state finals.
"That is actually out to bid right now and our board will review those contracts in our June board meeting," said Henry.
If there is a change in venue for softball, it would be the first time the Eastside Centre hasn't hosted in 20 years.
"These are year-long traditions. Softball being here since 2000 in East Peoria. Softball and baseball are staples alongside basketball," said Dalfonso.
"Emotionally, these won't be stories that high school kids get to write this year. That sometimes outweighs more that the dollars and cents and as much as that weighs in on our community as well."
While the impact leaves a seven-figure mark, Dalfonso fully supports the IHSA in putting public safety first.
