Coronavirus: UCSF researchers start study on impact on Latino community - San Francisco Chronicle

UCSF infectious disease researchers, in conjunction with officials from the Latino Task Force for COVID-19, launched a study Saturday seeking to understand the coronavirus’ impact on the Latino community.

Testing started at pop-up sites in San Francisco’s Mission District, offering both tests looking for active infections and antibody tests showing who may have been infected in the past. Latinos represent 15% of the city’s population but make up about 28% of its positive tests to date, according to Public Health Department data.

UCSF officials, who hope to test about 5,500 people, said more than 2,000 had signed up as of Saturday morning. Registration also is available at two schools and two parks in the Mission District.

“It’s really a question of equity,” Tracy Brown of the Latino Task Force said during a virtual news conference. “Many times, our communities have been locked out of testing because of the cost. This is free. … It’s very important to be part of this, so we can find solutions.”

UCSF chose the neighborhood for this project, called Unidos En Salud, because of its high population density and large Latino population. That combination makes it a high-risk area for spread of the virus.

“We have no vaccine or treatment, so we need knowledge and action,” said Dr. Diane Havlir, chief of the Division of HIV, Infectious Diseases and Global Medicine at UCSF. “That’s the purpose of this study. … We need to find out who’s infected and who’s already had it, so we can devise strategies.”
