Georgia's Reopening Amid COVID-19 Could Impact New York's Public Health - Spectrum News

NEW YORK - Some governors like New York's Andrew Cuomo are cautioning against a rush to reopen.

"I know people want to go back to work," Cuomo said during his daily presser. "I know people need a paycheck. I know this is unsustainable. I also know more people will die if we are not smart."

Others are giving the green light.

"We will allow gyms and fitness centers, bowling alleys, body art studios, barbers, cosmetologists, hair designers, nail care artists, aestheticians, their respective schools, and massage therapists to reopen their doors this Friday," said Georgia Governor Brian Kemp.

As we collectively fight the coronavirus, some experts say a relaxing of restrictions in one part of the country may very well adversely impact another.

"It’s as far as a drive away, so you figure a person can easily bring the virus into another location," said Jill Roberts, assistant professor of public health at the University of South Florida. "We knew this virus was in China. We knew it was in other countries. It still came to the U.S. There's no way we can stop that from happening. There's no way we can stop it from going state to state."

Public health experts warn the country should brace for a second wave of the virus. They say robust testing and contact tracing are key to containing the threat.

"If people from another region came here and they were infected, they would then be subject to whatever the programs and policies in place are in that region," said Dr. Andrew Goodman, clinical professor of public health policy at the NYU School of Global Public Health. "So, if in New York, we continue to have social distancing or stay-at-home, they’d be subject to those requirements as well."

The views of how quickly to reopen economies fall along political party lines. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and other Republicans in the southeast are forming a coalition and pushing a speedy restart. Cuomo and Democrats in northeast states also have a coalition, theirs stressing a need to first beef up testing.

"The economic recovery for the entire country is predicated on our public health recovery," said Rep. Adriano Espaillat, a Democrat representing parts of Manhattan and the Bronx. "And opening the economy up recklessly like that puts everybody in danger."

President Donald Trump, for his part, says that he believes that governors like Kemp should do what they think is best for their states. But the president also says he believes that reopening businesses this week is "too soon."
