Before training camp started and Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians and some of his players began making rookie outside linebacker Joe Tryon seem like the next Von Miller, Joe had modest goals for Tryon.
Joe figured since the rookie hadn’t played football since December 2019, that if he were to have an impact, Tryon would show up big in the latter part of the season. Joe also guessed that seven sacks would be a fine year.
But Lance Zierlein of NFL.com has an idea that Tryon could have a bigger impact.
In picking a rookie that could ball out for each team, Zierlein makes the point that with Bucs sack king Shaq Barrett and Jason Pierre-Paul, the Bucs don’t need Tryon on the field all the time.
Therefore, with Bucs defensive coordinator Todd Bowles’ fertile, creative mind, he can be picky when to use Tryon and put him in the best positions to make an impact.
Tryon has been impressing teammates and coaches alike with his flashes during camp. The Bucs fielded one of the top pass-rush units in the league in 2020, but injecting a young talent with a comfortable runway for development should allow Tampa Bay to pick and choose its spots for him, which increases his likelihood for early success.
Joe’s mouth waters for Tryon on the field on passing downs alongside Shaq and JPP and Vita Vea and/or Ndamukong Suh and/or Will Gholston.
It’s easy to overlook that Gholston led the Bucs in quarterback hits with 20. The way Vea collapses the pocket, he has to be double-teamed. Then offenses have to stop JPP, Shaq and Tryon. Good luck!
