In an attempt to promote the expansion of service, the Alma Transit Center was the beneficiary of a Gratiot County Community Foundation grant.

“The Gratiot County Community Foundation Board of Directors and Distribution Committee are glad to support the Alma Transportation Center and funding for bus badging on all new buses to promote the expansion of transportation services,” Chelsea Holmes Matz, Foundation Executive Director, said. “The Foundation is grateful to all its donors who have donated to help make grants like this possible in Gratiot County.”

The grant provided funds to have bus badging installed on 9 of their new buses. Along with the three school logo’s representing the schools that are in the service area, it states “Now in service in St. Louis, Ithaca, and Pine River Township.”

Brett Baublitz, Director of Transportation at Alma Transit, said the City of St. Louis has had service for the last few years and has built up a solid ridership base there.

He also said that there have been some rides booked in Ithaca and Pine River Township. However, he’s not sure if people know that it is available or how to use the service.

He said that the transit center has been ramping up the service during the soft opening and expects to have full service at the start of the school year. Also, it’s important to parents to be able to plan on how their children are getting to and from school.

“We didn’t want to wait until Oct. 1 to have full service as it would have caused a hardship on those parents needing transportation for their kids for over a month,” Baublitz said.

Alma Transit Center provides a curb-to-curb service. What that means is they will pick people up in front of
their residence and drop you off in front of their destination. There are no bus stops or predetermined routes.

The Alma Transit Center has a new fare schedule. Kids under 5 ride for free with their parent/guardian, youth (5-17) and adults (18-64) will have a two dollar ($2.00) fare. The senior rate (65-74) and reduced fare will be one dollar ($1.00). 75 and over (Gold Card) will ride for free.

People can travel with these rates anywhere in our new service area of: Alma, St. Louis, Ithaca and Pine River Township.

Baublitz hopes that people will take full advantage of the service by using it to get to and from work, medical appointments, and shopping.

“It is as easy as picking up the phone and giving us a call,” Baublitz said. “One of our transportation
coordinators will be happy to assist you. People who don’t have transportation will regain their independence and freedom with use of our service. We truly want to bring our communities together.”

The next Foundation Grant Cycle deadline is October 1, 2021. Grant Applications, as well as policies and procedures, can be found at gratiotfoundation.org.
