Mandatory evacuations have been ordered for thousands of residents in three neighborhoods just across the Salt Lake County border and into Summit County because of the fast-moving Parleys Canyon Fire.

Neighborhoods Evacuated

  • Lambs Canyon
  • Mill Creek (not the city in SL County)
  • Pinebrook
  • Summit Park
  • Timberline

The fire broke out to the south of Interstate 80 between mile marker 137 and 138 Saturday afternoon. It started as a 15-acre brush fire, and quickly grew to over 2,000 acres as flames moved up the mountain and away from the roadway.

Officials initially suggested residents voluntarily evacuate the Summit Park neighborhood, about three miles from the fire. They have since ordered Summit Park residents to leave their homes, and have extended the evacuation order to the nearby Pinebrook and Timberline neighborhoods.

Evacuation Center

  • Park City High School
    1750 Kearns Blvd, Park City

The evacuations have since been extended to the Millcreek neighborhood and Lambs Canyon. State fire officials estimated the number of homes under evacuation at 6,000 to 8,000.

Summit County officials said residents who have been evacuated should expect to be out of their homes for 24 to 48 hours, and plan accordingly.

Firefighters from the Park City Fire District were initially called in to help fight the fire, and have since been reassigned to structure protection.

The Red Cross has set up an evacuation center for residents needing a place to stay at Park City High School, located at 1750 Kearns Blvd. Ecker Hill Middle School was initially set up, as well, but was later closed.

Even with the threat of fire in the neighborhoods, Summit County Sheriff Justin Martinez said some residents were refusing to leave. He said those residents were making it more difficult for firefighters to focus on their efforts.

"You are hampering efforts and are putting first responders in danger," he said. "PLEASE (sic) evacuated immediately."

The fire has grown to an estimated 3,000 acres.
