RED BANK, NJ: Red Bank residents will be holding a rally to, “Repair the Red Bank Senior Center for Our Seniors,” this Saturday, January 9, 12:00pm.  The rally will take place at the Center's location, 80 Shrewsbury Avenue.

The Senior Center has been closed since September 2019 to meet required safety and fire codes.

On February 4, 2019, the Center’s fire suppression system was severely damaged due to a deep freeze.

The borough awarded a contract in May 2019 to the engineering firm MSGFire, Inc. to, “survey, design, and test a fire sprinkler system for the senior citizen center.”

The council solicited two bids to replace the fire suppression system and both were rejected as they, …“substantially exceed the Borough Engineer’s cost estimate.”  To see these bids, click HERE and HERE.

The Senior Center has been temporarily relocated to the Trinity Episcopal Church, 65 West Front Street, with the borough paying $2,000 per month according to a Resolution dated July 24.

At the Borough’s Reorganization meeting last Friday, Mayor Pat Menna said, “There is no present or anticipated plan to sell the Senior Center.  There is no mythical plan for that building to be sold.   The inescapable reality, which individuals know, is that it’s a 30-year-old building that has sustained and suffered a cataclysmic structural problem that will require assistance and remediation.  There was never any discernable plan right now or in the anticipated future that I can see for that building to be sold.”

TAPinto Red Bank reached out twice via email to Borough Business Administrator Ziad Shehady requesting information on the exact nature of the structural problems and anticipated costs.  No reply was received.

Residents are demanding action.

Tiffany Harris, former Outreach Worker for the Center said, “Two years of disrepair is too long and the council has done nothing to repair the Senior Center.  Restore our Senior Center where it is!”

“It is ironic how the council seems to be approving bonds every month but to put one together for the repairs needed for the Senior Center, they make it out to be a Herculean task.  Why is that?  Why is it taking over 2 years?  ANSWER: Demolition by Neglect,” said Red Bank resident Suzanne Viscomi.
