HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) - The next 36 hours will deal a heavy blow to Nebraska. Prolonged heavy snow will last through most of the day on Monday and bury much of The Southeastern half of the state under at least 6 inches of snow, with some places upwards of 10 inches.
Let’s begin with the timeline of events. Monday morning around 2:00 a.m. the initial snow will begin across the southern tier of counties in South Central Nebraska. And the period between 4am and 6am, It will overspread the Tri-Cities area and reach the i-80 corridor. Lincoln will begin sinks now around 6:00 a.m. and Omaha by around 8:00. This being the morning commute time for most people, the Tri-Cities and Lincoln area will likely already have 1-2 inches of snow on the ground. Heavy snow will continue after that point. By midday, the snow will have made it up to Norfolk, Greeley, and Burwell, with heavy snow continuing across the far southeastern part of the state from Hastings to Nebraska City. By 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., the majority of snow will have already fallen. The Tri-Cities will likely see 6 to 8 inches of snow by this time, and Lincoln could see upwards of 10 inches. Snow will continue until about midnight for Tuesday morning, tapering off significantly though across the state. During this time an additional couple of inches could still fall.
Now to detail the expected snow ranges. The sand hills will see the least amount of snow in the tra ce to 4-in range. most of this is out of the look for viewing area so it is not my immediate focus, and will not be impacted as harshly. Southwestern Nebraska will see a range from imperial to North Platte of about 4 to 6 in, and from McCook to Lexington to broken bow around 6 to 8 in. Ord and Albion will also see around 6 to 8 inches. From holdridge, through the Tri-Cities, following the plats to Columbus and Omaha, I anticipate a range of about 8 to 10 in in total. From red cloud, through Hebron, York, Lincoln, Beatrice, and into Iowa from Nebraska City, these regions will expect to see the highest snow reports of this event. A conservative estimate puts it at 10 to 12 in in this region, but it is likely we see some local reports over one foot. While the winds will not be high, there will be a chance for drifting with gusts upwards of 25 mph, so in these areas, snow reports may also be subject to much deeper snow due to moderate drifting.
There has been much uncertainty with this forecast and this latest update in the totals sides with the consensus of most guidance as it has come together today. Early on, it was decided to side on the lower ends of the range for the forecast when given on Friday and Saturday. With big events like this, it is responsible to air on the low side and increase the forecast as we get closer. This emphasizes the necessity to continually monitor the latest forecast information.
Beyond this event, Tuesday night into Wednesday morning will likely seean additional one to three inches of snow from a cook, through the Tri-Cities, and out into Iowa.
Now let’s talk about the temperatures as it is going to be quite cold with the snow on the ground. Monday and Tuesday will have highs in the twenties as the snow continues. Low temperatures for Monday morning will be mostly in the mid-twenties, as from tonight into tomorrow, the cloud cover and snow falling will keep our temperatures on a fairly shallow profile. Lowe’s on Tuesday morning however will drop down into the single digits. single digit Lowe’s will continue into Wednesday and Thursday morning, with highs and the teens on Wednesday and back to the mid-twenties on Thursday. Friday we begin to recover a bit closer to normal and into the weekend with highs mostly in the mid thirties. Beyond Wednesday, there’s no immediate chance for additional precipitation.
