The Middletown Emergency Operations Center is now open to assist residents with the rollout of COVID-19 vaccinations.

The center was mobilized today by town emergency staff to provide residents with the  latest details about the local process to get vaccinated for the virus.

Located in the Community Room of the Middletown Fire Station on Wyatt Road, the center will be staffed by town personnel daily between 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

The phone number is 401-842-6565 and the center can be reached at  MiddletownEOC@MiddletownRI.com via email as well.

“We felt it was necessary at this time to mobilize the (Emergency Operations Center) to  answer our residents’ important questions,” Town Administrator Shawn J. Brown said. “We  have staff that’s more than ready and able to answer questions and get our residents the  help they need at this critical time.”

Elderly residents can also call the Middletown Senior Center for details at 401-849-8823 or  akaull@middletownri.com via email.

This week, the state Department of Health announced a certain number of vaccines would  be allotted to each of Rhode Island’s 39 cities and towns. The state also required each  community to come up with a safe and secure plan to administer those allotted vaccines to  its residents.

In response, the town teamed with the City of Newport to come up with a fair, equitable  plan to deliver the doses. As part of that proposal, the “Southern Aquidneck Island  Vaccination Center” will open at the Community College of Rhode Island campus on John H.  Chafee Boulevard in Newport to administer the vaccine in mid-February.

Operating under the direction of the state health department, the vaccination center will  care for those who are 75 years and older first. Once that population is fully vaccinated,  other segments of the community will be served next.

The state of Rhode Island will be scheduling appointments for vaccinations based on the  available supply of doses. The phone number and online portal to sign up for appointments  is not yet available, but will be made public in coming days by state officials.

Vaccinations will be administered by appointment only. An opening date for the  vaccination center and other procedures and protocols are still being worked out between  the state, Newport and Middletown officials. Those details will be publicized via each  community’s website and social media channels.

“This is an important process, probably the most important job we’re going to do all year as  a town and we want to make sure we get it right,” Brown said. “Saying that, we’re asking for  people to be patient because the sooner we work through this, the sooner we’ll get  everything back to normal as much as possible.”
