Video shows moment of impact in horrific, deadly SF crash that led to murder charge - San Francisco Chronicle

The driver who led San Francisco police on a chase that ended in a horrific crash that killed one person and injured six others this weekend has been charged with murder and other crimes, prosecutors said Tuesday.

Paris Powell, a 20-year-old San Francisco resident, will be arraigned Wednesday afternoon. Police said that within minutes of beginning the pursuit, the Audi that Powell was driving ran a red light and smashed into a minivan, killing its driver.

The San Francisco medical examiner identified the victim as 63-year-old Fred Robino of Pittsburg. Two women in the minivan and four teens in the Audi were injured and hospitalized.

Video footage of the incident, obtained by The Chronicle from a police source familiar with the investigation, shows the moment of impact as the Audi tears into the intersection. The car is seen bashing into the front driver’s side of the minivan, the force of the impact shattering glass and sending the minivan rolling out of the video’s frame.

The pursuit began just after 7:30 p.m. Saturday, when officers tried to pull over a black Audi A3 linked to an East Bay armed robbery traveling in the Mission Bay neighborhood, police said.

The fleeing car touched off a chase that continued onto the freeway before returning to city streets in the Ingleside District, where officers lost sight of the vehicle.

Within minutes, dispatchers began receiving calls reports of a crash at the intersection of Geneva Avenue and Prague Street, police said. The Audi, which was headed eastbound on Geneva Avenue, ran a red light and smashed into a maroon Toyota minivan traveling north on Prague Street to westbound Geneva Avenue, according to police’s preliminary investigation.

Robino was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said Powell attempted to flee the scene on foot but was arrested shortly after the crash. He was treated at a local hospital and later booked into a San Francisco jail.
