TALBOT COUNTY, Md. – As Tropical Storm Isaias inches closer up the east coast, counties across Delmarva are bracing themselves impact.
“The one thing that’s predictable about weather is its unpredictability. With this storm, in particular, we’re always concerned about the effects of rain, we’re interested in the effects of wind, and most importantly we’re interested in the potential impact from tidal surge” said Talbot County Emergency Services Director, Clay Stamp.
In Talbot County, the town of Easton is just one of the places expected to feel most of the impact of Isaias. With heavy rain and winds that could reach up to 70 even 80 miles per hour.
“It wouldn’t be unexpected to experience power outages from this storm. And if we do, people need to be prepared to spend some time without power,” said Stamp.
On top of high winds, emergency service officials also want residents to be prepared to experience some coastal and flash flooding.
“If you see a roadway covered with water, do not drive through that roadway. Make sure you turn around and don’t drown,” said Stamp.
“If you know that your business or your house is very low lying, you may want to grab some extra sandbags, put them around your property to protect it,” said Meteorologist Ulises Garcia.
If preparing for a tropical storm wasn’t difficult enough, Talbot County emergency officials tell 47ABC trying to prepare during a global pandemic is also posing some challenges.
“Normally we would open a high school for sheltering and they would call that a congregate shelter, but we don’t really want to do that right now,” said Stamp.
This is why they say it’s important now more than ever to have a plan in hand – an emergency kit on standby -and extra supplies. Because it’s better to be safe than sorry.
“The problem with severe weather is that when it gets severe, it gets severe quick. And when it gets severe quick, it’s too late to do anything,” said Stamp.
