The Tommy Thompson Senior Center in Newnan is still seeking letters of love for homebound Coweta County seniors.

Leila Heptinstall with the center said she came up with the idea because she thought it would brighten up a senior’s day and has received about 35 letters and cards.

“It was great,” Heptinstall said. “We delivered them to the homebound senior this past week. We would still love to get more. Anyone is welcome to send a letter, card or note.”

Heptinstall said taking five minutes to write a letter of love to a stranger can make a homebound senior feel less lonely.

“Isolation creates feelings of loneliness, which can lead to poorer physical health and quality of life,” she said. By writing a letter, you can do your part to embrace our elders during these scary, uncertain times.”

Heptinstall said the letters can be a friendly hello or encouraging message. Letters can be sent to the Tommy Thompson Senior Center at 29 Hospital Road, Newnan, GA 30263.

“The seniors that received the letters were very excited,” she said. “Some of the seniors were going to answer the letters back. It's so nice to see a sweet smile on their faces and when you give them the letter it was like, ‘or me?’ Just nice for them to know that people really care about them.”

Staff will distribute them out to the seniors. Currently, the center is still closed to the public but staff is available by phone.

“We are here at the Tommy Thompson Center Monday through Friday for any questions or concerns that they may have or if they just want to talk,” she said.

Heptinstall said the center also mails out a monthly newsletter that features crossword puzzles, recipes, tips and updated information. She said the center also continues calling seniors that visit the center to check on them and make sure they have everything they need.

Heptinstall said the center is currently planning events for October, but dates and measures are not definitive.

What to know when deciding to go out

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there is no way to ensure zero risk of infection, but understanding potential risks and processes of prevention are important to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

As a reminder, if you have COVID-19, have symptoms consistent with COVID-19, or have been in close contact with someone who has COVID-19, it is important to stay home and away from other people. When you can leave home and be around others depends on different factors for different situations.

In general, the more closely you interact with others and the longer that interaction, the higher the risk of COVID-19 spread, according to the CDC. Important items to keep on hand when out in public include a cloth face covering, tissues and hand sanitizer with at least 60 percent alcohol, if possible.
