Positive coronavirus tests impact sports teams at 3 Utica schools - MLive.com

The first week of official high school sports practice is off to a disruptive start in the Utica Community Schools district as teams at three of its schools have had positive COVID-19 tests.

The Macomb Daily reported on Monday evening that the football, cheer and dance teams at Utica Eisenhower were suspending activities because of positive COVID-19 tests. It was reported that Eisenhower Principal Jared McEvoy notified families of the positive tests on Aug. 4.

On Aug. 5 at Utica High, a note from Principal Thomas Lietz noted a member of the football team tested positive and play would be suspended until Aug. 13. A girls lacrosse player was announced to have tested positive on Aug. 6, suspending the sport’s offseason activity until the spring. On Aug. 10, it was announced a girls cross country runner had tested positive as well. Also, a marching band member also tested positive at the school.

On Aug. 10, it was announced a Utica Ford boys soccer player tested positive as well. The Macomb Daily also reported that, as of Monday afternoon, the Macomb County Health Department said no other school districts in Macomb County had reported cases of positive COVID-19 tests among their fall sports programs or other fall activities.

Since the start of the pandemic, Michigan has tallied 87,960 confirmed cases of COVID-19.

Also on Monday, three football players at Birmingham Seaholm reportedly tested positive for the coronoavirus. In the summer months, Clarkston, Rochester Adams and Dearborn High were other Metro Detroit area football teams that had a player or coach test positive.
