ALBANY — As Tropical Storm Isaias moves its way up the eastern coast, New York is preparing itself for possible impact.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a conference call with reporters Sunday that he's concerned about the storm and is getting ready for it.
"We'll see where that goes, but we're preparing. Local governments should be preparing," Cuomo said. "We're having state assets moved as we speak: generators, pumps, large scale vehicles that can handle high water, and we put out a notice to local governments that they should be getting ready also."
According to the National Weather Service, the storm is expected to hover on the coast, with an impact of showers and thunderstorms that will likely begin Monday night and last through Tuesday night or Wednesday morning.
"The uncertainty depends on how quickly it moves out of the area, and also if it continues to track toward the right or further inland," said Andrei Evbuoma, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Albany. "Those are things we're monitoring."
Evbuomo said areas south and east of Albany County, such as Duchess and Litchfield counties, are expected to get the heaviest amounts of rainfall because of their proximity to the coast. Rainfall in the Capital Region could range from 1 to 4 inches, with a possible 5 inch total in Litchfield.
"Three inches of rain is a lot of rain in the Mid-Hudson," Cuomo said. "Homeowners who are in flood prone areas should also start to get ready."
There is a 5 to 30 percent chance for tropical storm winds, also most likely to concentrate in the southeastern areas.
Cuomo said he is expecting more information Monday.
