Moffitt Cancer Center has named Dr. Patrick Hwu, a tumor immunologist with 33 years of oncology experience, its new president and CEO.
He comes from MD Anderson Cancer Center at the University of Texas, the nation’s top cancer hospital, where he is head of cancer medicine. Hwu starts at Moffitt on Nov. 10.
The announcement Thursday comes about eight months after former Moffitt CEO Dr. Alan List and five others at the hospital resigned amid a controversy that linked them to possible exploitation of American-funded research by China.
Praising Hwu’s track record, Moffitt leaders said in a news release that he will bring the hospital to greater heights. Tim Adams, chair of Moffitt’s Institute Board of Directors, called him a visionary.
“Drawing from his innovative cancer research, quality patient care and extensive leadership experience, Dr. Hwu will no doubt continue to help Moffitt in our pursuit of dynamic growth and groundbreaking work,” Adams said.
In a statement, Hwu said it will be an honor to lead Moffitt, Florida’s top cancer hospital, and that he looks forward to advancing the work already underway. He said Moffitt has made “unprecedented strides.”
Hwu has been at MD Anderson for 17 years, holding various leadership rolls, including chair of the Department of Sarcoma Medical Oncology and co-director of the Center for Cancer Immunology Research. He is president-elect of the Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer and serves on the Melanoma Research Alliance Foundation Medical Advisory Panel in Washington, D.C.
The doctor’s research is focused on vaccines, adoptive T-cell therapies and immune resistance, according to the news release, and he has more than 270 peer-reviewed publications.
Moffitt founder H. Lee Moffitt said in the news release that Hwu will lead the hospital into the future.
“Coming from the largest cancer center in the country, where he has distinguished himself and produced incredible results, we expect he will successfully guide the Moffitt team through the next generation of cancer treatments and discoveries,” Moffitt said. “Our impact on helping cancer patients will be felt worldwide and, in the process, continue to make Florida proud.”
