More than 150 homeless clients will stay in the Reno Events Center after a judge blocked a new temporary shelter from opening as planned Wednesday.
The private concert planned by The Row casinos -- the event that prompted the city to vacate its clients from the venue-- has been rescheduled.
Since the start of the pandemic, the city has been using the events center as an emergency homeless shelter large enough to let its clients sleep more than six feet apart as a measure to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
But when The Row scheduled an Aug. 7 private concert in the center, the contractor responsible for booking the space asked the city to vacate the premises. That sent the city scrambling for a new site.
The city landed on a small plot of land on East Fourth Street just outside the front gates of an RV storage yard to erect tents large enough to accommodate the clients staying in the events center. That site was scheduled to open today.
But the owner of the storage yard, Scott Peterson, filed a lawsuit to stop the shelter from opening outside his business, claiming the city illegally ignored zoning laws, permitting requirements and noticing rules to hastily erect the new shelter.
Late Tuesday, Washoe District Judge David Hardy issued a temporary restraining order, halting the city from opening the new shelter until a hearing scheduled Aug. 11.
With no other contingency plan, the city said it will stay in the events center until the hearing.
"We are hoping to stay there as long as we can given the emergency," spokesman Jon Humbert said Wednesday. "This is unprecedented territory, but our city has a duty to those in need."
The city owns the events center. But the Reno-Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority is responsible for booking events there. It does so through a private contractor, ASM.
An RSCVA spokesman said the Aug. 7 concert has been rescheduled.
