Forecasted storms did not impact Butte Lightning Complex overnight, Cal Fire says - Chico Enterprise-Record

CHICO — A late weekend forecast that called for thunderstorms in the mountains east of Butte County missed the fires already burning in the Butte Lightning Complex, Cal Fire-Butte County said in an incident update Monday morning.

A total of 34 fires were started one week ago by lightning and have grown to a combined 3,527 acres with 40% containment. Generally light winds overnight and “moderate” fire activity allowed crews to make further progress on containment lines and mop up hot spots.

Eight of the fires are currently being staffed, including the 1-12 Fire, the biggest in the complex at 1,750 acres with 0% containment.

Other fires in the Inskip area include:

  • 1-2 Fire: 140 acres, 40% contained
  • 1-7 Fire: 100 acres, 40% contained
  • 1-8 Fire: 63 acres, 50% contained
  • 1-13 Fire: one acres, 30% contained

Evacuation warnings remain in place for the Inskip and Philbrook Reservoir areas.

Additionally, the 5-4 Fire, formerly referred to as the Potters Fire, is now at 927 acres and 95% containment. The 5-6 Fire in the vicinity of Feather Falls is 261 acres and 80% contained. Crews made significant progress on this fire between Thursday and Friday, allowing resources to be moved to other priority fires within the complex.

The 2-24 Fire southeast of Chico is 285 acres and 80% contained.

In addition to the lightning-caused fires, Cal Fire-Butte County responded to a fully involved structure fire in Kelly Ridge on Sunday night. The fire was contained to the structure and no one was injured in the fire. All resources were released as of 9:35 p.m., according to Cal Fire-Butte County.

The air quality index improved slightly in Chico and the foothill communities through Sunday to Monday, moving from an “unhealthy” range from 151-20 to “unhealthy for sensitive groups” AQI of 101-150. This range is expected to continue into Tuesday, according to the Butte County Air Quality Management District.

People with heart or lung disease, older adults, and children should reduce prolonged or heavy exertion.
