CARBONDALE (WSIL) -- On Sunday, the world was shocked to learn of the tragic death of NBA superstar Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna, and 7 others in a helicopter crash. Although the crash happened in California, the impact was felt all the way here in Southern Illinois.
"His daughter was a really good basketball player, I always watched her," said Carbondale girl's basketball player Faith Halliday. "The team he coached, her, and her very close friend that passed away were on that team, and it was just always fun to watch girls with such great talent being coached by a legend. It's just fun to watch them and look up to those people."
Kobe Bryant is considered one of the greatest NBA players of all time, but as a father to four girls he was a huge advocate for women's basketball. His impact is felt by girls all over the area.
"I love that, " said Halliday. " That was my favorite thing about Kobe. Not a lot of people pay attention to female players and seeing him being such a big helper with the next generation and bringing up his daughter and like other female athletes that's like a big deal."
"Most people don't pay any attention to it, the women's league and I feel like he did and I think that made a huge impact," said Carbondale girl's basketball player Akira Custer.
"I have a couple of jerseys of his I am a big fan of his I mean I've always watched him," said Halliday.
"I used to always watch his highlights and stuff and you know like most people, teenage athletes, we usually watch highlights to steal moves like that and see if we can do them," said Custer.
Akira Custer even honored his memory by wearing Kobe shoes
"Just paying tribute to him," said Custer. "I think that was important. I always show love to people. I just put on the shoes laced them up and just decided to wear them today."
As a former athlete Kobe Bryant embodied all the traits that I wanted to be as an athlete and as a person including his work ethic, his perseverance, his mental toughness, and the way he genuinely cared about people. His impact with never be forgotten.
