Letter | Voters can make environmental impact - Santa Cruz Sentinel

Recent studies conducted in the Monterey Bay have revealed that the levels of plastic pollution acquired have similar statistics to those of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. A discouraging insight into the health of our National Marine Sanctuary, which is thriving solely through the purpose of protecting one of the world’s most diverse marine ecosystems.

Unfortunately, the sanctuary’s boundary can only do so much when facing the growing issue of plastic pollution. We want to encourage our state leaders to act now to support the conservation and integrity of our oceans and marine wildlife.

With support from local constituents, we have a chance to make a more considerable change than banning single-use plastic bags. Through passing SB-54/AB-1080, the state of California will have the chance to make a tremendous environmental win, requiring all throwaway foodware and packaging to be made of recyclable or compostable materials.

The Sentinel welcomes your letters to the editor. Letters should be short, no more than 150 words. We do not accept anonymous letters. Letter-writers should include their full name as well as a street address and telephone number. We don’t publish those details in the newspaper, but need the information for verification purposes.
