DANVILLE – “We’re not out of the woods,” said Dr. Jaewon Ryu, President and CEO of Geisinger recently when he outlined COVID-19 trends in the Valley and what to expect from the virus this winter.

Dr. Ryu said he’s concerned the upcoming cold and flu season, especially for unvaccinated people, “This notion of the ‘twindemic’ – and I put that in quotes – it’s the idea that you could be infected with COVID and flu together. It’s the one-two punch that could very well knock you out.”

Dr. Ryu said 90% of patients hospitalized at Geisinger COVID-19 are unvaccinated and more than 1,000 hospital workers are currently in quarantine. He said it’s very important to not only get vaccinated, but to continue virus mitigation efforts like social distancing, wearing masks and frequent hand washing, “When we dampen the spread and activity level of the virus, that reduces the chances for there to be mutations that can continue to propagate and have this pandemic last longer.”

With schools back in session and businesses fully open, Dr. Ryu says we need to be careful, “We’re not out of the woods, and we have events in schools and all these things that are more open this year than last year. We all need that, but at the same time, those are ways that the virus continues to spread.”
