Careers in social work and human services are projected to grow by 12 percent over the next decade. Most communities cannot hire and retain enough social workers to meet the demand. This industry needs people who are looking to make a real difference in the world, and that starts with this current generation of students. With a regional and statewide need in mind, Feather River College is proud to announce its new Associate of Arts for Transfer (AA-T) in Social Work and Human Services.
Social work education includes the study of human behavior in the social environment, individual therapeutic treatment, child welfare, psychology, business administration, funding procurement, and program management. This specialized education allows social workers to bring an in-depth understanding of needs and problems, and the appropriate interventions, into every context or situation they face.
The intention of the SWHS program at FRC is to support local college students with a quality, affordable, and locally focused social work degree and prepare them for priority transfer acceptance into CSU bachelor of social work (BSW) programs, including the renowned social work program at CSU Chico. This two-year program includes the SWHS 110 introductory course, which is offered on campus in Spring 2022. This course is a pre-requisite to the second program requirement, SWHS 120, a fieldwork course for students.
According to Taylor Storey, FRC faculty member in Social Work and Human Services, “The goal of any social worker is to work themselves out of a job, as this field exists precisely to address social problems and work to promote individual and social dignity and well-being. Given the reality of increasingly uncertain times, with the highest levels of stress and inequity society has ever seen, the need and demand for ethical, culturally sensitive social workers and human service providers has never been higher.”
