Mainly as a result of the Wildcat-laden Los Angeles Chargers being on their bye week, this Week 7 of NFL play featured only defensive stat-producers from Northwestern. As such, please enjoy this defensive special edition of Northwestern in the NFL:
While Lowry may have traded his Northwestern’s purple for Green Bay’s green and yellow, he sure did represent NU well on the field this past week. The DE’s highlight was a fumble recovery (initially ruled an interception) in the third quarter during Green Bay’s 24-10 victory over the Washington Football Team. Lowry totaled five tackles, aiding the defense and helping his team move to 6-1 at the top of the NFC North.
Walker popped off on defense this week for the Browns, there’s no other way to say it. The linebacker led the team in tackles with 10 total, seven of which were solo. This stat line tied Walker’s season-high for tackles, and the former ‘Cat has continued to improve his numbers in recent games. In his last three games, Walker has improved from six, to nine, to ten tackles. While the AFC North spotlight remains on Cincinnati and Baltimore, Walker is making an impact on his Browns team that currently occupies the last AFC Wild Card spot.
After recently recovering from a calf injury, Newsome II was back in play for the Browns. He was able to make an impact on defense with three solo tackles — tying his early career-high. He also had one pass defended. Newsome II may not be the Brown’s top cover-man, but he’s playing well, especially for a rookie. The cornerback’s presence back on the turf was felt and needed by an injury-riddled Browns team in its close win over the Broncos.
While Lancaster’s team continues to succeed, the DE has had a relatively stagnant season. In the Packers' Week 7 game against Washington, Lancaster recorded two total tackles —one of which was solo and the other assisted. This stat line is on-par with his performance this season, making two tackles in every game save for the Week 2 win against Detroit when he had only one. Without many big-time sacks or any other flashy statistics, Lancaster is expected to continue being a rotational player for Green Bay.
