Through the help of a University of Maryland scholarship, Jaymi Bautista-Whitaker has been able to transition from being a standout student-athlete and softball player to being a mother and aspiring surgeon.
Bautista-Whitaker fell in love with softball at a very young age. Growing up in Gainesville, Florida, Bautista-Whitaker began playing softball at just seven years old. She would quickly become a success, and by fifteen was already competing for the Peruvian national softball team. Softball would become her identity throughout her college career and remains very important today.
“Softball’s always been my life. I can remember distinctly telling my parents when I was twelve years old that I want to do this in college. I remember watching college athletes back when softball was a smaller sport, [and thinking] I want to be just like those girls,” she said.
A standout at the Oak Hall School in Gainesville, Bautista-Whitaker headed west initially and played two seasons at Santa Clara, but a hand injury limited her playing time.
Bautista-Whitaker, then Bautista-Geiger, decided to transfer back east following her sophomore season in 2013 and enrolled at Temple in August. But Temple cut its softball program in December of 2013. When Bautista-Whitaker heard the news, she knew she didn’t want it to be the end of her softball career and made the decision to transfer once again.
“They cut the program at Temple, and my dad came up, and we packed up my entire apartment and then just went down the entire east coast, going on visits. Maryland was the school that stood out to me,” she said. “Coming to Maryland was like a second chance. I thought that my softball career was over when they cut the program at Temple.”
