GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - Students at the Academy of Medical Sciences at Grand Island Senior High got an exclusive look at the new surgery center at CHI Health St. Francis.

Roughly 150 sophomores got to see inside rooms, handle equipment and get hands-on experience from lessons they learned in the classroom.

The academy exposes students to careers they’re interested in and this field trip to the hospital was another way to foster their interests.

“Hopefully push them toward what they want to do or continue down that path,” Academy of Medical Sciences Teacher Jake Myers said. ‘If they figure out, you know, hey we just saw the placenta, the placenta is not for me, I don’t think I can see that on a daily basis, I’m going to try to find something different.”

The surgery center is expected to open next month and the hospital was thrilled to have the students be one of the first people to see it.

“We love to teach at St. Francis and unfortunately in the operating room, you can’t always touch things, so this is a great opportunity for the students to actually get hands-on and use the instrumentation and do some simulation,” Surgical Services Clinical manager Kim Calkins said.
