California Welcome Center opens at Torrance’s Del Amo Fashion Center - The Daily Breeze

A new California Welcome Center at Torrance’s Del Amo Fashion Center has opened — and is ready to welcome visitors when vacation travel picks up as the coronavirus pandemic continues to wane.

Torrance Mayor Pat Furey announced the tourism booth was in the works at the mall during his October 2019 State of the City address, a few months before the pandemic began.

The mall booth will largely cater to those unfamiliar to the area, rather than locals. But South Bay residents will also benefit from what is only the second official state tourism center in Los Angeles County, said Fran Fulton, Torrance’s economic development manager.

“Tourism is an important contributor to the city of Torrance economy and adding a California Welcome Center is a great opportunity to assist in our sustainable growth as we continue to recover from the pandemic shutdowns,” she said in a press release. “Travel spending supports local businesses as well as essential services and programs, so the new Welcome Center will support locals as much as it will benefit visitors.”

Torrance may not possess the high-profile entertainment options of, say, Long Beach or even Hermosa Beach with its Pier Avenue nightlife. But Torrance is seen as the center of the South Bay brewery scene and the growing beer tourism industry, given the number of breweries located in close proximity, especially on the east side of the city.

And the Del Amo Fashion Center is a major draw for shopping.

The welcome center booth sits at the main entrance to the mall from the outdoor lifestyle wing near the AMC Theatres.

The center offers maps of the area and other information, as well as two kiosks where visitors can plan trips and book accommodations. Travelers who complete a “bingo card” of must-visit Torrance locations, which are also available at local hotels, can redeem it for a prize at the Welcome Center, while supplies last.

“As visitors start to feel ready to travel again, we’re excited to connect with them on their journeys,” said Linda Amato, board chair of the Discover Torrance visitor’s bureau, “by sharing some of the best-kept secrets in Southern California.”

The Welcome Center is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Saturday and from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. The booth does not have a telephone number.

Del Amo, as well as other malls and businesses, is still operating at reduced capacity because of the pandemic.
