A man died during a traffic stop in Brooklyn Center around 2 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. It happened in the 6300 block of Orchard Ave. in Brooklyn Center.
Information released from Brooklyn Center Police say the driver had an outstanding warrant, and at one point officers were trying to take the man into custody when the driver re-entered the vehicle.
Police say one officer discharged their firearm, striking the driver. The vehicle traveled several blocks before hitting another vehicle
A press release said officers and medical personnel attempted life saving measures, but the person died at the scene. Media outlets have identified the individual as a 20-year-old Black man named Daunte Wright.
Police say a female passenger inside of the car sustained non-life threatening injuries during the crash and was transported to North Memorial Health Hospital in Robbinsdale. People inside the vehicle that was struck during the crash were uninjured.
The release said Brooklyn Center officers do wear body-worn cameras and they believe both body-worn cameras and dash cameras were activated.
Brooklyn Center police asked the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) to conduct an independent investigation of the incident.
Meanwhile, people congregated at the scene on Orchard Ave., and when officers left that area, protestors moved to outside of the police station. Photos on Twitter showed one, perhaps two, squad cars vandalized.

There were also reports of someone shooting at the Brooklyn Park police station, but no injuries were reported.
Public officials weighed in as well.
