Atlanta Braves News: Early overreactions, impact prospects and more - Talking Chop

The Atlanta Braves ended their six-game road trip on a good note by sweeping a doubleheader from the Washington Nationals to score their first two victories of the season. Atlanta dropped their first four games of the season for the first time since 2012. Things turned out ok for the 2012 Braves as they went on to win 94 games and secured the wild card in the National League. Still, an 0-4 start naturally produced some clear overreactions.

That is understandable given the high expectations the Braves have for 2021. We are coming off of a 60-game regular season in which each game did have more meaning. It is worth remembering that a normal 162-game regular season is much more of a marathon than a sprint.

MLB Pipeline lists each team’s potential impact call up for the 2021 season. For the Braves, it is outfielder Drew Waters.

Right now, there isn’t a clear opportunity for Waters to form the Ronald Acuña Jr.-Cristian Pache-Waters outfield trifecta we’ve all been waiting for. But the 22-year-old Waters can continue to refine his approach at the Braves’ alternate training site and then in Triple-A so he’s ready when that call comes, either because of an injury or if someone isn’t getting the job done.

The Oakland A’s are off to a slow start this season and their injury situation isn’t getting any better. The team placed A.J. Puk on the 10-day injured list due to a strained biceps. The A’s also transferred reliever Trevor Rosenthal to the 60-day injured list. Rosenthal is likely headed for thoracic outlet surgery.

The Milwaukee Brewers have agreed to a minor-league contract with veteran infielder Dee Strange-Gordon.
