Whenever Valley Center High plays Escondido in football, a name change is in order.
Instead of Valley Center, the Jaguars should be called Victory Center because they rarely lose to the Cougars.
At least not lately.
The 17-14 victory at Escondido on Friday was the ninth consecutive win by the Jaguars against head coach Rob Gilster’s alma mater.
“Escondido plays as hard as anyone against us,’’ said Gilster, whose team improved to 2-0, 2-0 in the Valley League. “Every time, every play they are tough.
“Right now, we’re like everyone else, making lots of mistakes.’’
Not against the Cougars (1-1, 1-1).
By winning, the Jaguars remained atop the league.
Although they have not played every year, the last time Escondido defeated Valley Center was 36-33 in 2004.
“We’re more disciplined than they are and tougher,’’ said senior Ethan Villalobos. “Every quarterback wants to throw more and score now, but this is how we win games.’’
This one was hardly a pretty effort.
It took a fourth-and-2 pass for 29 yards to Raymond Stehly in the final minute to clinch the win.
“We wanted to go 1-0 this week and get a little better,’’ said Villalobos, who was at Orange Glen until this season. “We run the ball down your throat and then we come back and run it down your throat again.
“I knew if I complete that last pass, we’d win the game.
“All I had to do was relax and make a good throw.’’
Villalobos threw a 14-yard TD strike in the first quarter to Jake Dunckel and ran for a 5-yard TD in the second quarter for a 14-0 lead.
A 25-yard field goal with just 3:15 to play turned out to be the winning points after Tajae Brooks scored on a 78-yard pass down the sidelines from quarterback Robbie Ramos for Escondido with 2:37 to go.
“We don’t have to be pretty,’’ Villalobos said. “We just had to be 2-0 when we were done.
“Everyone has bought into what Gilster knows, but we have to get better.”
Colton Crossley led the Jaguars with 34 carries for 134 yards.
Ramos also threw a 15-yard scoring toss to Brody Mossbarger late in the third quarter for the Cougars.
Valley Center, which beat Fallbrook 28-0 in the opener, owns a 13-4-1 edge in the series against the Cougars.
