RED BLUFF — It’s hard to fit Red Bluff’s history into a frame, but the combined efforts of community members were able to do just that with a framing project at the Community Center.

Photos, some more than 100 years old, were provided by the Red Bluff Community Center Auxillary while handmade frames were crafted by inmates of the Tehama County Jail with help from woodworking instructor Mike Shaffer.

The photos were framed Monday morning and hung at the Community Center.

Shaffer teaches woodworking to the inmates in an AB 109 program overseen by the Sheriff’s Office and the Probation Department. The wood for the frames was donated by Sierra Pacific.

“This particular project is in the eyes of all of Red Bluff and all of our hard work and effort is going back to the community,” Shaffer said.

In 2018, the photos were almost destroyed in the Stoll Fire when the workshop was caught in the blaze. Many of the frames were, however, destroyed along with the wood at the time.

“Everybody in the program is extremely happy to see their work out in the public,” Shaffer said.

Auxillary member Carmen Gleason said the pictures had been stored away after the Community Center was painted but without frames, they remained out of commission for some time.

“We had the pictures but we had no way of getting them framed and on the wall,” Gleason said. “When Mike and his program took this over, it enabled us to put these pictures back together and on our wall.”

Gleason said the Community Center was a great place to showcase the photos so everyone who visited could see them.

“These pictures are the history of Red Bluff,” Gleason said. “They’re very apropos for the Community Center because the Community Center is for Red Bluff. So this is a good thing. We are so pleased to have the program.”

Dennis Castleman, another auxiliary member and Gleason’s son-in-law, said the photos have been through a lot over the years besides fire.

“It’s been a long time,” Castleman said. “It’s been years since they’ve come off the wall. Such a long time we thought they were lost again.”

The photos showcase various historical aspects of Red Bluff. One shows a parade down Main Street on Independence day in 1890. Another shows a marching band lined up for the camera. Others are of old businesses and buildings, some still around, such as the old courthouse and others long gone such as a restaurant serving chicken.

Those who want to see the photos and frames for themselves can do so at the Red Bluff Community Center at 1500 South Jackson Street.
