Wood Signs Six Impact Players in First Recruiting Class - BallStateSports.com

MUNCIE, Ind. - - With her initial recruiting class for the Ball State softball program, first-year head coach Lacy Wood and her staff have brought in six standout student-athletes who are poised to make an immediate impact on the program.
 
In the circle, the Cardinals welcome Jessica Hoffman (Chicago, Ill./Trinity)Hannah Mays (Fishers, Ind./Fishers)Angelina Russo (Cardiff, Calif./La Costa Canyon) and Madison Taylor (Fortville, Ind./Mt. Vernon).
 
Kaitlyn Gibson (Peru, Ill./LaSalle-Peru) will look to help solidify the Ball State infield, while Hoffman could also make an impact in the outfield. McKenna Mulholland (Oviedo, Fla./Lake Howell) and Mays look to be all-around threats in a utility role.
 
"We are very excited to officially welcome the newest members of the Ball State softball family," Wood said. "As a staff we are thrilled at the strength and depth of this class. From Florida to California and a few places in between, these six young women will come in right away and raise the bar here in Muncie. We have had the opportunity to get to know these athletes over the past couple of months and we are excited not only about what they bring to the program on the field but who they are off the field as well. The future of Ball State Softball is bright."

HIGH SCHOOL: Enters her senior season as a three-year letterwinner for coach Randy Huebbe at LaSalle-Peru … reigning team captain for the Cavaliers … earned First Team Northern Big 12 All-Conference and Second Team 3A Illinois ICA All-State as a freshman and sophomore … also First Team All-Area as a freshman and sophomore … played in all 31 games as a sophomore, producing a .514 batting average with 55 hits in 107 at bats … collected 10 doubles, a triple and seven home runs, while scoring 29 runs and driving in 60 RBI … also owned a 4.51 ERA in the circle, throwing 63.2 innings and striking out 45 batters … played in all 28 games as a freshman, registering a .525 batting average with 42 hits … credited with five doubles, four triples and two home runs, while scoring 12 run and driving in 21 RBI … also owned a 3.12 ERA in the circle, throwing 24.2 innings and striking out 13 batters … also played two years of volleyball and one year of basketball for the Cavaliers … outside athletics, earned First Team Northern Big 12 All-Academic (freshman, sophomore), Interstate 8 First Team All-Academic (junior), and High Scholarship all four years. 
 
CLUB: Played for the Nationals Premier for five years under coach Larry Brzezinski … helped lead team to be 2020 Louisville Slugger Summer Swing Champions. 
 
WHY BALL STATE: I chose Ball State because of the atmosphere and feeling of home I got as I stepped on campus. When meeting the athletic advisors, they made me feel like I was about to be a part of a family that would take care of me. The coaches and players made me feel like this is my second home.

HIGH SCHOOL: Enters her senior season as a three-year letterwinner under coach Bob Osbourne at Trinity … played in two games as a sophomore before suffering a season-ending injury … recorded five hits in six at bats, including a home run, while scoring four runs and driving in four RBI … also registered five strikeouts in one start her only appearance in the circle … played in 32 games as a freshman, registering a .224 batting average with 15 hits, including six doubles and a pair of home runs … also drove in 11 RBI and scored 10 runs … posted a 5-6 record in the circle her debut season, striking out 60 batters … also earned two letters in cross country.
 
CLUB: Played for the Midwest Machine for five years under coach Josh Baer … totaled 637 career at bats with 256 hits, 77 doubles, 17 triples, and 18 homeruns … helped her team to a third-place finish at the 2018 PGF Midwest Regionals
 
WHY BALL STATE: I chose Ball State to further my academic and softball career. I also thought the campus was really nice, especially the athletic facilities that they had to offer. I also knew that Ball State would challenge me to work hard to further my softball skills.

HIGH SCHOOL: Enters her senior season as a three-year letterwinner under coach Daren James at Fishers … earned First Team All-Conference as a sophomore and Second Team All-Conference as a freshman … named the Tigers' Offensive Player of the Year as a freshman and earned team MVP sophomore season … helped guide the Tigers to sectional and regional championships, as well as a 17-10 overall record, her sophomore season … made 26 appearances in the circle, boasting a 14-7 record and a .309 ERA while striking out 112 batters … also produced a .467 batting average with 42 hits, including seven doubles and seven home runs … scored 18 runs and tallied 40 RBI … made 23 appearances in the circle as a freshman, tallying a 9-5 record and 4.84 ERA to go along with 36 strikeouts … registered a .412 batting average with 33 hits, including 13 doubles and six home runs … added 13 runs scored and 41 RBI … also played one year of basketball at Fishers and earned honor roll in each of her third years so far. 
 
CLUB: Played for the Indiana Shockwaves for five years under coach Josh Harvey. 
 
WHY BALL STATE: I chose Ball State because since the first time I stepped on campus, I have felt like part of a family. I felt very welcomed by everyone. I have always wanted to be a teacher and Ball State is a perfect school to get a great education!

CLUB: Played for the Florida Impact for three years under coach Bill Hoopes … earned a career batting average of .450 with an on base percentage of .625 … she tallied 15 extra base hits, 43 RBI, and eight stolen bases in the fall of 2020. 
 
WHY BALL STATE: When I stepped on campus, I just knew it was right. It's a beautiful campus, facilities are amazing, and the softball team is even better!

HIGH SCHOOL: Enters her senior season as a three-year letterwinner at La Costa Canyon under coach Rachel Wright … First Team All-Avocado West as a freshman and Second Team All-Avocado West as a sophomore … coming off a shortened junior season which saw her boast a 2.41 ERA and a 4-3 record over 40.2 innings of work while striking out 44 … also tallied a .375 batting average with nine hits, one double, three RBI and one run scored … made 25 appearances in the circle as a sophomore, producing a 3.65 ERA and a 5-5 record over 132.1 innings of work while striking out 144 batters … at the plate, she hit .278 with a pair of doubles and 17 RBI … produced a 12-9 record and 2.98 ERA as a freshman, striking out 103 batters over 110.1 innings and holding the opposition to a .190 batting average … hit .304 at the plate, including three doubles and nine RBI … off the field, she earned the Seal of Biliteracy for Spanish. 
 
CLUB: Played for the Athletics Jendro Premier club team for eight years under coach Brian Jendro … helped the team earn third place at Colorado Sparklers Power Pool in 2019 … that same year, she pitched 189 innings with 370 strikeouts and 1.41 ERA. 
 
WHY BALL STATE: I chose Ball State because I really loved the family atmosphere within the team and coaches. Everyone in Muncie was so nice and it was comforting to know I'd have a home away from home. I also liked the wide variety of academic options at Ball State.

HIGH SCHOOL: Enters her senior season as a three-year letterwinner In softball … played the 2018 and 2019 seasons at Noblesville under coach Deke Bullard … All-State Honorable Mention and First Team All-Conference as a freshman … also named to the Hoosier Crossroads Freshman All-Conference team her debut season after helping guide the Millers to regional and sectional championships … went 18-5 in the circle as a freshman, striking out 124 batters over 124 innings while producing a 2.27 ERA … also registered a .427 batting average with three doubles and 27 RBI … went 12-6 in the circle as a sophomore with a 3.04 ERA over 106 innings of work, striking out 99 batters … also produced a .306 batting average with a pair of doubles and 12 RBI
 
CLUB: Played for the Indiana Gators 02 Kissee team for three years under coach Louis Kissee … helped lead the team to tournament wins at the Top Gun USSA and Eastern Elite Showcase, as well as a second-place finish at the 2020 Colorado Sparkler (which was held in Tennessee due to the COVID-19 pandemic) … owns a 1.91 ERA over 157 innings with 163 strikeouts, while batting .354 with 42 RBI. 
 
WHY BALL STATE: I chose Ball State because they have an excellent medical/science program. The school is also close to home and I really look forward to working with the Ball State Softball coaches, players and program.
