Los Angeles County announced stronger stay-at-home orders on Friday that that will go into effect on Monday and will last until until at least Dec. 20.
With COVID-19 cases surging in Los Angeles County, the new restrictions are intended to ban most public and private gatherings, but will allow outdoor activities such as visiting beaches, parks, and even golf courses, though the county asks that you do not gather with people outside your immediate household.
How will these new restrictions impact UCLA and USC football who have two scheduled games remaining, including the UCLA-USC rivalry showdown on Dec. 12 at the Rose Bowl, in addition to another possible game the following week? UCLA and USC’s men’s and women’s basketball teams have started up too.
ESPN’s Kyle Gonagura asked Dr. Barbara Ferrer, the LA County public health director, and she doesn’t anticipate it will change anything because both schools are already implementing strict testing protocols and are in constant contact with county officials.
Ferrer also doesn’t expect it will impact the practice or game schedules for the Los Angeles Rams or Chargers, though everything is subject to change.
“We haven’t changed the protocols for the pro sports teams,” Ferrer told ESPN. “Obviously, they are under extraordinary strict protocols right now. A lot of that is through their own associations but they also have the county’s protocols that they need to adhere to and we’re in constant contact with them so they know their obligations. They are and will remain spectator-free.
“Collegiate sports, we align with the state’s collegiate sports guidance, which here is a directive. But it’s fully aligned with the state. Should the state change their guidance then we at the local level will change with the state.
“I do want to note that we have worked very closely with all of our colleges and universities and I want to thank them. I want to thank our major sports teams. They’re in constant contact with our teams here. I feel like this relationship has been very beneficial. Everyone knows that if you have positive cases, whether you’re a pro team or you’re a college team, you need to report those cases to us and we work with you on the outbreak (to) manage plans, to try and avoid as much spread as possible.”
Los Angeles’ stay-at-home order does not impact pro and college sports. They can stick with the protocols that are in place.

Up north in Santa Clara County, a new health order that takes effect Monday will ban all team practices and games from the high school to the pro level, which will impact Stanford, the San Francisco 49ers and others in the county. Both Stanford and the 49ers are working on alternative plans to finish the season outside the Santa Clara County boundaries.
