When the news spread in the fall of 2019 that the Da Vinci Science Center would be expanding into downtown Allentown, lots of Lehigh Valley residents were excited. What will excite them further, more than a year later, is that they’ll have a hand in shaping it.
The science center is working with Thinc Design, Inc. to develop the new expansion’s visitor experience, and the design company wants to hear from the future visitors on what they want that experience to look like. The company and science center will be holding a Zoom call to hear thoughts and ideas on exhibits and experiences in the new science center location from 3 p.m. to 4: 30 p.m. on Tuesday.
According to a release from the Da Vinci Science Center, the New York City-based Thinc Designs has previously worked with the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry and the Empire State Building Observatory. Talking to the very groups that will be interacting with its designed exhibits is a crucial part of Thinc Design’s process. “The goal of the discussions is to hear directly from you about what you’d like to see represented in the new science center, your experiences and perceptions of science, and understand what is interesting and relevant to you, your friends and family,” according to the release.
In this case, the design company is particularly interested in hearing from local students. The science center has on its website a brief form that students and a parent or guardian can fill out if interested in participating. Thinc Design will send out a Zoom invitation and some discussion questions via email to selected participants.
The new Da Vinci Science Center building, which will be an expansion to the current 29,000-square foot facility in Allentown’s West End, will be nestled right next to the PPL Center, adding to the rapidly changing landscape of the city. It’ll replace the Farr parking lot on North Eighth Street. When the plans were announced in October of last year, Allentown School District Superintendent Thomas Parker said, “It’s going to generationally affect the lives of kids that live here in the city of Allentown. This is about equity and access.”
And now, students who’ll visit the center in coming years will have a chance the see their own ideas take shape in front of their very eyes.
