Lowe’s today confirmed it plans to build a 1.2 million square-foot bulk distribution center in Bessemer that should be operational by the fall of 2021.
Steve Salazar, a Lowe’s spokesman, said the center will be run by a third party, and will provide shipments of bulky items and replenish inventory for more than 112 stores in Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Georgia, Florida and Tennessee.
No word yet on how many jobs the project will create.
The Bessemer center is part of a $1.7 billion distribution network expansion the home retailer is undergoing, which is projected to create almost 5,000 jobs nationally through 2023. The company plans to build seven bulk distribution centers.
“The 1.2 million square-foot facility will enable Lowe’s to provide faster and more predictable deliveries to customers in Alabama and surrounding states as we continue to grow our distribution network,” Salazar said in a statement. “These new facilities will enable next-day deliveries for a broader range of products and give customers a more consistent experience.”
