One Harrison County organization had a lot of celebrating to do Thursday night.
Genesis House, a transitional home for women battling addiction, was deemed a winner of a grant and awarded $87,000 from Impact 100 Southern Indiana.
Impact 100 is a group of women who, for the past four years, have raised funds to give to a non-profit organization that directly affects the lives of women in Harrison, Floyd or Clark county. The group’s goal is to have 100 women from communities in those counties donate $1,000 throughout the year to make up the award money for the grant.
The application process is open to all local organizations, and the members use a grading sheet to determine the top three finalists. Those finalists then present to all the members who vote on an overall winner which is awarded the grant money.
The grant total has varied each year based on the donation amount, with the goal being to raise $100,000 annually.
In 2019, Home of the Innocents received $106,000 from Impact 100. Hope Southern Indiana received $100,000 in 2018, and $50,000 was awarded to St. Elizabeth Catholic Charities in 2017 during Impact 100’s first year.
“COVID put us a bit behind in our funds raised this year,” Marcia Bickers, vice president of the Impact 100 board, said. “We are so happy to be able to do this for Genesis House, however, because they are so deserving, and our members who donated really saw that.
“Everyone who applied for the grant is doing amazing things for our communities, and we are proud of them all for the work they do,” she added.
The other two finalists this year were the Harrison County Community Services and Align Southern Indiana.
Genesis House, which opened in early August, is home to seven women currently and has space for 15. Each woman stays for six months but can opt to move downstairs and manage the house at night for up to three additional months. The women who live at the house are submitted to random drug testing, must pay a small rent each month and attend therapy, counseling and goal-setting workshops with the staff in order to better themselves and have a smoother transition back to everyday life.
“I am completely blown away that we won this grant,” Meghan Stockdale, executive director of Genesis House, said. “For them to give this grant to us — an organization who is just in their first year of being open — really shows us how big our impact can be.”
Stockdale said that with the grant she hopes to make their first big purchase of a 15-passenger van. With this van, the women will be able to travel together to meetings or to events in the community. She also said they hope to buy a few other items for the house like a stackable washer and dryer so more laundry can be done each day, computer desks, a deep freezer for the kitchen and dressers.
“I’m using some of the money to get a new certification for me to better help the girls,” Stockdale said. “We also will be buying art supplies and yoga equipment to start art therapy and a yoga program.”
